The Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón, a glacial river lagoon in Iceland, is part of one of the shortest rivers in Iceland, Jökulsá á Breidamerkursandi, which is only 1500 metres (4900 feet) long.
The Glacier lagoon in Iceland is close to highway number one, about 370 km (230 miles) east from Reykjavík and it is told to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. This is lagoon is a recent one, the result of a warmer climate. The surface is at sea level and sea water flows into the lagoon at high tide.
Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breidamerkurjokull glacier, and large icebergs from the glacier float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but up to 250 meters deep which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland . The glacier Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is an outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier.
Glacier Lagoon is a famous tourist attraction, and has been seen by more people than other Icelandic sites, but that is due to a part of a James Bond film, Die another day, being filmed there.
We offer exciting boat trips on the glacier lagoon in one of our four amphibian boats. In the tour you sail among the huge icebergs in this unique scenic environment.
Jökulsárlón ehf. has done cruises on the Lagoon for over 25 years. We offer two types of boat tours:
Amphibian Boat tour:
In the tour you sail among the huge icebergs in this unique scenic environment. In the tour you get to taste the, more than 1,000 year old ice and if you are lucky you might even see some seals.
The tour takes approximately 40 minutes and includes an English speaking guide who explains to you the geology and facts of the lagoon. Other languages that our guides speak are Icelandic, German, Danish, Italian, Spanish and French. However language skills vary between guides,if there is a group on the boat that speaks one of the languages stated above, we try our best to put a guide on the boat that speaks your language.
The Zodiac tour is a new tour since 2011. Our Zodiac boat can hold up to 10 persons.
We have two of them so up to 20 people can go at the same time.
The Zodiac tour takes 1 hour.
On the Zodiac we are able to cover large areas of the lagoon and get closer to the Icebergs than on the amphibian. When possible the Zodiac can go almost all the way up to the glacier (as close as safe).
Passengers are provided with flotation suites and a life jacket.
We don't recommend to take children under the age of 10 on the Zodiac tour.
(1.July – 31. August) There is no schedule for the boat tours however the trips are very frequent, at least one every 30 minutes during high season, outside the high season the trips are still quite frequent.
